About Lego Technic and Power Functions

Lego Technic History

Lego Technic was previously known as Lego Systems and it started all the way back from year 1977 to the present day. As the years go by, Lego would stop producing the older sets and start selling newer sets which makes older sets harder to find and buy. This is because the sets would get old and unpopular overtime causing Lego to make big losses on low demands.

These are some of the sets that are from 1977:

As the years go by, Lego Technic evolved from stud to studless creations.

Stud and Studless

This major improvement and change in design started in year 2003, allowing connector pegs to equally align vertically and not letting chances of leaving any blank holes unconnected

Lego Power Functions History

The electrical motor system started in year 2007 to the present day, the Lego company needed to make new interactive innovations that could move on its own, so they started making the Power Functions line.

The first appearance of the Power Functions system was in the 4957 Ferris Wheel set, consisting of only a basic battery pack and the basic M-motor.

Prior the Power Functions system, some older motors, sensors and battery packs were manufactured by the Lego company.

Efficiency chart comparison of old motors and Power Functions motors with a 9V supply:

Old Motors Old Motor Efficiency Power Functions Motors Power Functions Motors Efficiency
2838 First Lego Motor 31% PF Medium 37%
2986 Micromotor 16% E-Motor 36%
5292 Race Motor 37% PF Large 42%

The motors are compared side-by-side relative to torque, rotations per second and size of the motor. A general trend shows that power functions motors have a overall higher efficiency compared to the older motors.
